Navigating the skincare aisle in any store can be overwhelming, especially when choosing products for your children.
While it’s tempting to pick up a popular brand or the latest trending item from your child’s favourite influencer, not all adult skincare products are suitable for younger skin, in fact, it can cause problems that sometimes do not become evident until later in life due to the damage to underlying skin structures.
I’m hoping to guide you through the complexities of skincare for kids, highlighting why certain adult skincare ingredients, particularly retinols, may do more harm than good for your little ones.
Understanding Young Skin
Children’s skin is fundamentally different from that of adults. It’s thinner, more sensitive, and still developing.
According to dermatologists, children’s skin has higher water content, is less oily, and more prone to irritation than adult skin. Because of these differences, the skincare products designed for adults can be too harsh for young skin, stripping away essential oils and causing irritation and damage to the skin cells, structure and barrier function.
The Risks of Adult Skincare Products on Children
Among the most concerning ingredients in adult skincare products are retinols. Retinols, or Vitamin A derivatives, are celebrated for their anti-aging and acne-fighting capabilities in adults. However, they can be overly aggressive for children, potentially leading to skin irritation, excessive dryness, and increased sensitivity to sunlight.
Beyond retinols, other adult skincare ingredients to watch out for include:
– Salicylic Acid: Often used for treating acne, it can be too strong for young skin, causing dryness and irritation.
– Benzoyl Peroxide: Another common acne treatment that can be overly drying and irritating for sensitive skin. It should only ever be used as a spot treatment on pimples, not over the whole face.
– Fragrances and Parabens: These additives can trigger allergic reactions and are generally best avoided in children’s skincare products.
Alternative Ingredients and Safe Practices
Instead of reaching for potent adult formulations, opt for ingredients that are gentle yet effective for maintaining the health of children’s skin. Some safe alternatives include:
– Hyaluronic Acid: Known for its hydrating properties without the harsh effects. The skin needs to be moistened with water before applying to have the most effective response.
– Aloe Vera: Soothes skin and provides mild, natural moisture.
– Zinc Oxide: A gentle mineral that provides effective sun protection without harsh chemicals.
When choosing skincare for children, simplicity is key. A gentle cleanser and moisturiser, along with SPF50 sunscreen, are generally sufficient for maintaining healthy skin and remember the neck, ears and decolletage.
For the most effective results in sunscreen application, whilst still indoors, apply the sunscreen to cooled skin and allow at least 10 minutes for absorption before going out in the sun. When reapplying, head back inside and allow the skin to cool before completing the application process again. Choose a SPF 50+ sunscreen that has TGA approval in Australia. It is the best option as, in order to receive that approval, the product has been through very rigorous testing to prove that it can do what it says it will do.
When to Start Skincare for Kids
Most children won’t need anything more than basic skincare—cleansing, moisturising and sunscreen—until they reach puberty. This changes if a child has specific issues like eczema, which might require targeted treatments under medical guidance. It’s advisable to start children with a simple routine and build from there as needed and consult professionals where needed.
Choosing the right skincare for your children doesn’t need to be complicated. By understanding the unique needs of their developing skin and opting for products designed for their delicate complexion, you can help maintain their skin health without exposing them to harsh chemicals. Always read labels carefully, consult healthcare providers when necessary, and educate yourself about the products you bring into your home. Together, we can make informed choices that prioritise our children’s health and well-being.
