A choice is the ability or right to choose. Also known as decisions, choices are a necessary part of life and are something that we all must make every day in so many different ways in order to function.
There are choices that we make consciously, meaning that we are aware and base that choice on our own ethics, morals and values and there are choices that we make unconsciously, meaning it is being made outside of our awareness, as if we are on autopilot where your beliefs, behaviours and life experiences up until that point, play a part.
This can explain why one person may see something as a good choice while another person might see the opposite. These choices are what we base our actions or inactions on. There are no wrong answers with a choice. There are, however, consequences, lessons, learnings, and experiences that go with every choice. We have the freedom to choose just as we have the freedom to re-choose if a choice, we have made is not working for us.
Sometimes choices are quick and easy or feel light and therefore, are a green light and sometimes we deliberate, procrastinate, have a heavy feeling in our gut or need further information before eventually make that choice.
There are also times when we refuse to, don’t like to, or just cannot make a choice. Did you know that is actually, also a choice? We are always choosing whether we care to admit it or not. Each one of us are responsible for our own experiences in this life.
We are each responsible for every choice we make, regardless of our personal circumstances. Whilst we cannot always control what happens to us, we can control how we interpret, react and/or respond.
Remember, not reacting or not responding is still a choice and we are still making a choice on how we are interpreting the meaning of an event. Your interpretation may be different to somebody else’s because we all have different experiences and frames of references based on our lives so far and that’s okay. If we all interpreted everything the same way, that wouldn’t be very interesting, would it?
What if we made a conscious choice to become 100% responsible for everything that occurred in our life, no matter what. It would be a process that would be so enlightening, like a rebirth.
Doing this would allow you to take responsibility for your life. It would allow you to remove any masks you are wearing, to break through the facades you are hiding behind, to see through a different lens because we are actually responsible for everything that happens in our lives, regardless of the external circumstances. The sum total of all our choices has gotten us to where we are today.
So today, right now, make a choice to accept where you are and accept what has happened to you, around you and because of you, up until this point. It has happened. You can’t change what has already happened.
You can change how you react, respond, and interpret things though so if something isn’t working for you or isn’t making your heart sing, you always have free will and can make a different choice.
